Ladies Auxiliary FRA 208
(Minutes and local announcements are below)
Who We Are
We are a local branch unit of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve Association.
Organized in 1930, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve Association (LA FRA) is chartered to aid, assist and promote all matters pertaining to welfare, social, and patriotic works of the Fleet Reserve Association , its members and their families. There are LA FRA Units located throughout the United States and the Philippines. There is also a Membership-at-Large (MAL) roll administered by the LA FRA National Offices, for those who do not have access to, or do not desire to join a Unit. The LA FRA is proud of the heritage and traditions of this great nation and we recognize the sacrifices, past and present, needed to keep us strong and free.
What Do We Do?
LA FRA plays an active role in the local community by promoting youth activities, Americanism, and charitable causes. At the national level, LA FRA funds four annual scholarships and was a major contributor to the building of our nation's Navy Memorial, located in Washington, D.C.
LA FRA Units sponsor and assist local communities with their memorial ceremonies and patriotic events. They also participate in social events such as dances, luncheons, picnics and fund-raising activities. Annual regional and national conventions, caucuses, workshops, convention tours, shows and dinner/dances round out many exciting activities available to LA FRA members.
Who Can Join?
All applicants must be at least sixteen (16) years of age.
Membership in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve Association is limited to spouses, parents, grandparents, sisters, brothers, children, stepchildren and grandchildren not less than 16 years of age of members of the Fleet Reserve Association and widows, widowers, parents, grandparents, sisters, brothers, children, stepchildren and grandchildren not less than 16 years of age of persons who were members at the time of death or eligible to be members of the Fleet Reserve Association at the time of death.
How Can I Join?
LA FRA members fall into two categories:

- Members who do not belong to any LA FRA Unit but join as "Members-at-Large."
Each member selects which membership category she desires.

---In the Jacksonville Daily Newspaper on Sunday October 21, 2011 (Page C3) was a photo of Past President Margaret Boggs with school counselor Elizabeth Lavigne with school supplies the Unit members had donated to the Bell Fork Elementary School. Bridget Hendges had taken school supplies the Unit members had donated to the Hunters Creek
Elementary School also.
---From Bertha Erickson – Curtis and I went to Las Vegas on September 25th for a week. We stayed at the Tahiti Village, Las Vegas Blvd South. We were some distance from the strip but the shuttle ran every 30 minutes so we could catch it and ride down and get off at two different areas. We took tours to the Grand Canyon and to Hoover Dam. We had done those tours before but it was in March and snow was on the ground when we were at the canyon. We only saw one show – a magician. It was good and made you wonder how some of those things happened. I always enjoy the lights and tall buildings. We also attended our granddaughter’s 16th birthday on September 24th. She thought we were going to be in Las Vegas but we surprised her and changed the flight date. When we made the arrangements we did not know she was going to have a party. Of course, we would not miss it.
---From Annette Cherry – In June of 2011 I attended my 57th Class Reunion in Columbia, South Carolina. In July of 2011 my husband and I went to the Bahamas on a seven day cruise.
---Margaret Boggs’ sister, with her seven year old twin grandsons visited her for a few days.
---Arlene Hemmingway and her sister went to the Museum of Art in Raleigh and saw the Rembrandt exhibit on November 2nd.

---From Bertha Erickson: “Curtis and I went to Harrisonville, Missouri on 18 May to our granddaughter’s graduation from high school on 22 May. We attended a graduation party for her and three friends on Saturday 21 May at The Farm. Then there was a pool party that night but Curtis and I did not go. The graduation was moved to the gym on Sunday due to forecast of rain. There were 195 students that graduated. A few were going in the military and over 130 were going to college. There were over one million dollars in scholarships given to them. I thought that was a large amount for that number of students. Alexandria got a $1,500 scholarship from the college for soccer, $500 academic from the school and $1,500 from the Fleet Reserve Branch 208. She is going to Park University which is near Kansas City. She wants to work for CSI when she graduates so that is the field she will be majoring in.
On 28 May, Curtis and I went to Wilson for a birthday party for our great grandson, Logan. He will be six years old on 1 June. He kept saying he was six on Saturday. He could not understand why he was having a party and was not six. So we did not try to correct him. He is such a cute little boy, you just want to hug and squeeze him.

DID YOU KNOW
---Bertha and Curtis Erickson spent the month of September in Hawaii. "We traded our time share for four weeks over there. We spent two weeks in Maui, one week in the big Island of Hawaii and one week in Kauai. We really had a good time and tried to do a couple of tours on each Island. We did the parasailing, the submarine, took a dinner cruise, a train ride to feed the wild pigs, then a tour of the rain forest and had lunch, a walk through the orchard and we could pick the fruit from the trees and eat it. Then the train came back and picked us up and took us back to the station. We did the luau but we were not too pleased with the food but enjoyed the show. We did the helicopter tour ride over the volcano. The pilot really took us in close to see everything. I thought he was going to land at one time. Then he took us out over the ocean to see that. There was one house left and the individual still lives there. We also did the Sugar Cane Ride.
We did the Best of Kauai Tour which was an all day tour. I also did the zipline tour. That was lots of fun. We met the Maui Lions Club while we were in Maui. All the clubs were having an auction at a Community Center so we went to that. We did bid on a bottle of wind and won. So we enjoyed it. The day we were to leave Kauai, we were looking for something to do and they were having a Coconut Festival. There was a Lions Club there selling hot dogs so we stopped and talked to them. We took a picture of them to put in our newsletter. I will send them a copy of the newsletter. It was a good vacation but was good to get home. Took a while to catch up with everything."
---From Rossie Ritter: "My grandson, the actor, came for the weekend in late September. I was very excited that he would take the time to come. We had a great time getting to know each other and he saw family that he had not seen in a long time. The California trip the prior week was great. There were seven of my fourteen grand kids in and out all week. Sure did enjoy that, also the trip to San Francisco where we rode the trolly car and bus, and walked and saw parts of the city that I never knew existed. Of course the highlight was to see my grandson in action in the show "Wicked" - So excited!! The day before we (my oldest granddaughter went with me) left to come home, we all went wine tasting to five different wineries. Yes, we had a DD. All in all it was an outstanding trip."
